Vieques and the damage done →
I had a long post written about this last night but Tumblr ate it. I’ll keep it short this morning because I haven’t had coffee.
My husband and I went to Vieques last summer. It was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. So beautiful that we made plans to visit again, and when we got home, we began investigating the possibility of buying property there. That’s when we found out about all the military testing, and the alarming cancer rates among Vieques residents.
This article, and others like it, makes me sick, angry, sad … to think that there’s a place so beautiful, so peaceful, so PERFECT, and that we’ve ruined it. I wish there was something we could do. I’m not sure there is, other than perhaps raise the awareness of what happened. We’re no longer daydreaming about buying property there, and probably won’t even return there for another vacation. But we’ll always remember how unbelievably beautiful that island is, and I’ll always hope for some sort of relief for the residents who are suffering.
